The Institut de la Vision joins forces with the Contentsquare Foundation to develop the first passive system for detecting visual impairments

Research project aims to increase digital accessibility while facilitating the early detection of visual impairments

Paris, May 16, 2022 The Contentsquare Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting digital accessibility, is partnering with the Institut de la Vision, via its company Streetlab, to develop the first passive system for measuring the online behavior of people with visual impairments. By using innovative technology, the research project will also leverage digital experience insights to better understand the progression of certain eye diseases.

This three-year project aims to facilitate the rapid screening of visual impairments by focusing on central vision pathologies. Over time, the project aims to improve understanding of the digital uses of visually impaired people in order to raise awareness in the various sectors of the challenges of digital accessibility.

Launching on May 19, 2022 – Global Accessibility Awareness Day – phase 1 of the partnership will allow researchers from the Institut de la Vision to understand what browsing behaviors are associated with various vision disorders. A comparative exploratory study will be conducted on 8 visually impaired subjects (suffering from cataract, AMD, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, etc.), comparing them to 8 age-matched sighted controls.

Phase 2 of the project will leverage Contentsquare technology to understand what performance indicators are associated with the browsing behaviors identified during phase 1. In phase 3, the conclusions of phase 2 will be validated using the website of a Contentsquare client.

When the project is completed, it should be possible to follow the evolution of a visual pathology, to detect the evolution of pathologies, and to measure the gain or loss of visually impaired people.

“In the event of a change in user behavior, it would then be possible to create alerts to warn the user. This answers a need voiced by patients who wish to be reassured about their condition between specialist visits.”

– Emmanuel Gutmann, CEO of Streetlab

“We are delighted to collaborate with the Institut de la Vision on this ambitious project which aims to accelerate innovation in the service of research and digital accessibility. At our stage of development, we believe it is time to assume greater responsibility in this area, which requires a better understanding of the barriers that prevent millions of people from accessing the digital world. We have a lot to do and even more to learn, and we are happy to embark on this journey alongside the Institut de la Vision,” explains Kat Borlongan, Chief Impact Officer of Contentsquare.

“This partnership between the Contentsquare Foundation and the Institut de la Vision is a concrete step towards a more inclusive future,” shared Marion Ranvier, director of the Contentsquare Foundation. “Thanks to the analysis of the data we will collect, we will unlock a better understanding of how people with visual impairments behave online, which in turn, will facilitate better recommendations to make sites accessible, with a view of building a truly inclusive digital world”.
