What are the Core Web Vitals?
We can’t talk about website performance without mentioning Core web vitals.
Google’s most recent algorithm update measures page experience using multiple search signals, one of them being Core Web Vitals. It takes into account the load speed of a website, but it also includes other factors that relate to the overall usability of your website.
Web performance and Google’s Core Web Vitals
Core Web Vitals measure site performance based on three evaluation criteria:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), or simply your website load speed. It’s the time it takes for a page’s primary piece of content to load. It marks the exact moment when the largest piece of content such as image, video, or text block on the first section of each page is fully loaded. The average rate of a correct LCP is about 2,5 seconds according to Google.
- First Input Delay (FID) is the delay users experience when interacting with the page for the first time. It measures the responsiveness of the web page. The rate recommended by Google is 100 ms or less.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) measures page stability by monitoring significant movements of the elements on the page that may frustrate or mislead the user. If you’ve ever experienced a sudden shift while on a page, like an image or text changing its place, it’s due to CLS. Google recommends that you keep your CLS score under 0.1.

How do I know if my website is performing well?
To understand how your website’s performing, you can run your URL through a site speed testing tool. There are plenty of free tools out there, like Google’s Page Speed Insights.
